Vitamin B12 Deficiency Treatment
Vitamin B12 deficiency anaemia is a common condition that can usually be treated effectively with Vitamin B12 injections. At Orchard House, we primarily use hydroxocobalamin, the preferred treatment in the UK, as it remains in the body for longer than cyanocobalamin.
Initial Treatment
For newly diagnosed deficiency, treatment is often given every other day for two weeks, or until symptoms begin to improve.
Ongoing Treatment – Diet Related Deficiency
If your Vitamin B12 deficiency is linked to dietary intake, ongoing treatment may involve a hydroxocobalamin injection twice yearly.
Vitamin B12 is naturally found in foods such as:
-
Meat
-
Salmon and cod
-
Milk and dairy products
-
Eggs
-
Yeast extract products
-
Fortified breakfast cereals
-
Some soy products
Ongoing Treatment - Non Diet Related Deficiency
If your deficiency is caused by poor absorption rather than diet — such as pernicious anaemia, a common cause in the UK — ongoing treatment is usually one injection every 2 to 3 months, long term.
Neurological Symptoms
If Vitamin B12 deficiency has caused neurological symptoms such as numbness, tingling, balance problems or nerve-related changes, specialist assessment may be required. In these cases, treatment frequency and duration will be guided by an appropriate Consultant
Important Note
All treatment recommendations depend on your medical history and diagnosis. Our team can discuss whether Vitamin B12 treatment is suitable for you and whether GP follow-up or specialist referral is recommended.
